Get everyone into the party
Get the practical bits settled first, then let the game night be about playing together.
Choose the right way to play
| Mode | Players | Before starting |
|---|---|---|
| Same console | 1–4 | Connect controllers and choose the player count. |
| Online | 2–4 | Arrange Nintendo friends and an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. |
A simple online setup checklist
- Agree on who will host and make sure the players are Nintendo friends.
- The host creates a room. The other players use Search for Room.
- If the host chooses a password, share the four-digit code privately with the invited players.
- Wait for everyone to join and confirm they are ready before starting.
Why can only one player start an activity?
The host handles shared actions such as menus, building transitions, and starting activities. Ask that player to make the selection if a guest cannot move the session forward.
A good host gives a short warning before leaving a place or beginning a longer game. This is especially helpful when someone is still shopping or learning a solo activity.
If a room is not appearing
- Confirm the host actually created the room and is waiting for players.
- Check that everyone is searching with the intended Nintendo account and friend connection.
- Recheck the password and membership status, then follow any error message shown by the console.
- If connection trouble continues, use Nintendo’s own support for the displayed error code rather than changing unrelated account settings.
Questions to settle before buying or inviting
Can I play alone? Yes, the local game supports one player. Can strangers automatically join? The manual specifies registered friends for online play.
Do not assume mixed local-and-online groups, cross-region behavior, cross-generation room compatibility, or save-transfer rules from the platform logos alone. Those combinations have not been tested for this guide. Check the relevant official product and support information for your exact setup.
